The Heart Foundation of Jamaica (HFJ), a registered non-profit organization was formed in 1971 sponsored by the Lions Club of Kingston. Dr. Gerry Humphries (Cardiologist) became the first Chairman of the Foundation ably assisted by Mr. David Martin (chartered accountant) First Vice Chairman and Mr. Peter Bangerter (businessman), second Vice Chairman. The vision of the organization was developed a few years prior to its establishment in 1971. The members and the founding leaders (Professor Mike Wooming, Dr. Jeffery Humfries, Dr. Junior Wong, Dr. Bernard Benjamin and Peter Bangerter) were stirred to commit to a mission aimed at improving the cardiovascular health of Jamaican citizens.

The organization’s management and administrative support grew incrementally since its debut in 1971. A part-time secretary was eventually hired named Mrs. Elenor Grant and a few years later, a Manager, Mrs. Jeanne Shearer, was employed.  A office was rented at 30 Beechwood Avenue, in Kingston which remains the HFJ’s head office to date. The Governor General of Jamaica, Sir Clifford Campbell was named Patron during that time.

The efforts of the Foundation were and continue to be funded primarily by subsidized user fees, fundraising initiatives and donations from corporate, commercial and social entities who support the vision and mission of the HFJ.  Subsequently, the Foundation became a member of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology (ISFC), now The World Heart Federation located in Geneva, Switzerland. The Foundation is involved in advocacy initiatives such as the Global Health Advocacy Project (GHAP) and the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control (JCTC).
